Mesa’s Coons Takes Second in Javelin at Championships

Leslie Coons of San Diego Mesa College took second place Saturday in the women’s javelin at The Athletics Congress U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Coons threw the javelin 148 feet 8 inches, trailing only Oregon’s Tonia Roth (151-7).

David Loshonkohl, also from Mesa College, took third place in the hammer throw (173-6). He trailed high school competitors Mark McGehearty (177-0) and Sean McGehearty (176-5).

Erin Blunt, who recently was graduated from San Pasqual High School, won her heat in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 14.35 seconds. Hers was the fifth-fastest qualifying time. Blunt took third in her heat in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.23, the 11th-fastest qualifying time.

Olympic medalist Buddy Melges was welcomed back to Fontana, Wis., like a long-lost sailor after helping America 3 win the America’s Cup.His community treated him to a $150-per-person reception this week at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club.

There were about 650 people, including White House chief of staff Samuel Skinner, who read a congratulatory letter from President Bush.

Proceeds went to the Geneva Lake Sailing School, where Melges began his sailing career more than 50 years ago.
