As Algeria prepared to mark 30 years of independence, five policemen were shot to death in the former French colony less than a week after head of state Mohammed Boudiaf was assassinated. The attackers blasted two patrol vehicles with automatic weapons near Boumerdes on the coast, state radio said. The killings were reported as Algeria marked its independence day with flags at half-mast on the final day of mourning for Boudiaf.
