Schedule Changes at LACO

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra has announced the indefinite postponement of three programs in Los Angeles County and a date change for the 1992-93 season.

A concert in Orange County on Nov. 22 will take place as scheduled.

The decision to make the changes was based on, among other things, “the continuing recessionary economy of Los Angeles and the civil disturbances that began April 29,” according to David Gersh, chairman of the orchestra’s board of directors.

The economy and riots “have negatively affected our earned and contributed income, forcing the cancellation of two of our concerts during the crisis, substantially lowering our single-ticket sales for the remainder of our season and decreasing year-end contributions from individuals,” Gersh said.

The postponements, Gersh continued, “only serve to keep us financially stable. While this is very disappointing, it is not in any way a crisis situation.”

Postponed indefinitely are a Franz and Richard Strauss program Nov. 12 and 14; a May 12-14 program of music by Bach and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14 (both programs were to have been conducted by Christof Perick, the orchestra’s incoming music director), and a program to have been conducted by Helmuth Rilling Feb. 17, 18 and 19.

A program of music by Stravinsky, Mozart and Schubert, to be conducted by Perick, has been moved from April 28 and 30 to May 12-14 at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena and the Japan America Theatre in LA.

Gersh said ticket holders will be contacted regarding exchanges and refunds. Information: (213) 622-7001.

The Orange County program, sponsored by the Orange County Philharmonic Society, will take place as scheduled at the Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, a spokesman for the orchestra said Monday. Perick will conduct Ravel’s “Ma Mere l’Oye,” Berlioz’s “Nuits d’ete” (a song-cycle with contralto Anne Gjevang and Bizet’s Symphony in C.
