Microsoft Shows Off Windows NT: Microsoft Corp. rolled out a preliminary version of its next-generation Windows software to software writers, hoping to persuade them to develop programs for it. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates told 4,500 software developers at a San Francisco conference that the new product, aimed at high-end computer systems, should be available at year-end. Called Windows NT, for New Technology, it differs from today’s Windows in that it is an operating system, or base layer of software. Microsoft will need the software developers’ support to write new applications for Windows NT, although the new product will be able to run programs designed for today’s Windows.
