VENTURA : Man Gets 6 Years for Plot to Kill Boss
A Ventura man has been sentenced to six years in prison for plotting to murder his boss.
Jamer Singh, 25, a native of Malaysia, pleaded guilty May 21 to several charges, including solicitation to commit murder and possession of a machine gun.
Investigators said Singh plotted to kill John R. Hanley, owner of a gas station and convenience store on Harbor Boulevard where Singh worked. Singh was angry with Hanley because he had fired Singh’s cousin, investigators said. A co-worker tipped off police after Singh mentioned that he was looking for a gun with a silencer.
An undercover officer met with Singh several times and taped conversations in which Singh said he planned to ambush Hanley when he arrived at the store on the morning of Feb. 19, investigators said. On Feb. 17, minutes after undercover officers sold Singh a gun and a silencer, police arrested him.
At Singh’s sentencing Wednesday, Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard E. Holmes asked for an eight-year sentence. Defense attorney Richard W. Hanawalt asked for probation, which could have included up to a year in jail.
Superior Court Judge Charles W. Campbell Jr. decided on the six-year term.
