BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : These Guys Need Some Rest

Brett Butler and Eric Karros were the only Dodgers to play in every inning of the recent four doubleheaders, including 18 innings last Friday and 56 innings from Monday through Wednesday.

Jose Offerman played every inning in the last three days but skipped the second game Friday against Philadelphia.

“My wife was laughing at me as I tried to get out of bed this morning,” Butler said. “I’m sore, but if we had another doubleheader (Thursday), I would play. That’s what this game is all about, not griping and just playing.”

Karros laughed when he stepped on a scale Thursday. He had lost seven pounds, down to 211.

“You could just watch what happened when I batted to know that I was wearing down,” said Karros, referring to several long fly balls that were caught Tuesday and Wednesday. “My legs were heavy. I had no more juice.”

The Dodgers continue to pay big bonuses for their June draft picks, as they signed UCLA outfielder Michael Moore for a bonus package worth $537,500, with an extra $12,500 if he finishes his final year of college.

Moore, also a wide receiver for UCLA, was the Dodgers’ second pick, No. 36 overall. His bonus is larger than the estimated $500,000 received by the Dodgers’ first pick, Ryan Luzinski, who was No. 32 overall. The Dodgers did not have a first-round pick.

Moore, who sources say will not attempt to continue his football career, will report today to Yakima (Wash.) in the rookie league.

“We had a fortunate draft where the first two players we selected, we had rated very, very high,” said Fred Claire, Dodger vice president. “We had them rated as first-round picks.”

The Dodgers have signed their top 22 picks.

Mike Sharperson was a late scratch Thursday because of a strained right groin muscle, an injury he suffered Tuesday. But he said he thought he would be fine to play in Tuesday’s All-Star game. “All I need to do is rest for one day,” he said. “I hardly feel it right now.” . . . Mike Piazza, Henry Rodriguez and Pedro Martinez will play in the triple-A All-Star game July 15 in Richmond, Va.
