July’s Mix Ranges From Classics to Comedy

July theater has a packed roster of touring productions, home-grown premieres and classics. The offerings include:

Sunday: Theatre/Theater plays host to Lee Rosenthal’s “Crushed: Tales From the twenty nothing Generation,” a collection of solo pieces--some of which were featured in last season’s anthology “A Freeway Home Companion.”

Wednesday: “The Secret Garden,” Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon’s hit musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic children’s novel, arrives at the Shubert Theatre in Century City.

Thursday: Los Angeles Repertory Company presents Clifford Odets’ story of a dentist trapped in an unhappy marriage, “Rocket to the Moon,” at the Company of CharActers Theatre in Studio City.

Friday: “Tiny Alice,” Edward Albee’s dramatic investigation of faith, sacrifice and martyrdom, gets a revival at the Open Fist Theatre in Hollywood.

Friday: At the Victory Theatre in Burbank, Lee Murphy and Jan Bina’s comedy, “Sirens of Seduction,” brings seven women together at an at-home lingerie party.

Friday: Lori Saveriano’s “Water Ballet,” a comedy-drama about women and men, babies, friendship and falling in love, opens at the Melrose Theatre in Hollywood.

July 22: Caribbean romance and nonstop song and dance highlight the story of a peasant girl’s passion for a wealthy young aristocrat in the Tony-nominated musical “Once on This Island,” coming to Beverly Hills’ Wilshire Theatre.

July 23: At the Getty Museum in Malibu, Bryan Rasmussen reprises his role as Vincent van Gogh in David Wolpe’s solo show “Sincerely Yours, Vincent,” based on the correspondence of the artist.

July 24: The Virginia Avenue Project, which paired 16 children from the Santa Monica Police Activities League and 16 adult writer-performers, brings the resulting “Hot Air,” 16 one-act plays to UCLA’s Little Theatre. Free.

July 30: “Caught Between the Sheets,” a multimedia work exploring the lives and issues of second-generation Korean-American women, has two performances at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Hollywood.
