Azusa : Council Orders Waste Plan

Share

Warned by a representative for a state waste agency that the city has become delinquent in preparing a trash reduction program, the City Council on Tuesday reluctantly ordered a plan drawn up.

Lloyd Dillon, of the California Integrated Waste Board, urged the city to respond to the state’s recycling law, which requires cities to reduce refuse sent to landfills by 25% by January, 1995.

Cities were required to file plans by July 1, 1992, and could face a fine of $10,000 per day, Dillon said. Azusa is among only three of the county’s 89 cities that have not filed a recycling plan with the state. Los Angeles and Malibu are the other two.

Councilman Stephen J. Alexander said Azusa will continue to send a representative to Sacramento to protest the law, which the city considers an unnecessary financial burden on residents, and will “fight everything until the state gives us the money to implement this program.”
