Faculty Layoffs

Share

So the San Diego State University professors are outraged they are being laid off.

They protest, stand in the university courtyard holding placards with the words “laid off” and their names written underneath in red ink, as if it is blood and they are participating in a human rights march in El Salvador.

They pass a declaration of “no confidence” in President Thomas Day. Some threaten to sue.

They say the university is being ripped apart, education will never be the same, and our future is at risk.

They’re probably right. But call it like it is.

They’re simply getting a dose of reality, and they don’t like it.

Auto workers and carpenters never had tenure, a nine-month-a-year job that allows for lucrative consulting. Most people have tougher schedules than teaching a couple of classes a semester with the help of a graduate assistant.

Sabbaticals are as common as disposable income in the working world.

Well, welcome to the real world, gang. Welcome to layoffs.
