LOCAL NOTES : Hamilton Helps Team Win Olympic Kayak Berth

Costa Mesa’s Mark Hamilton and three others won a 1,000-meter kayak race Saturday at Lake Placid, N.Y., and will represent the United States in the event at the Olympics in Barcelona.

Hamilton, Chris Barlow of San Diego, Mike Herbert of Rogers, Ark., and Terry Kent of Rochester, N.Y., won the flat-water race in 3 minutes 2.91 seconds. The other kayak--paddled by Mitch Kahn of San Clemente, Curt Bader of Bloomfield, Iowa, Michael Harbold of Honolulu, and Peter Newton of Honolulu--finished 3:05.13.

The Newport Beach Dukes were taken to overtime before defeating the host Sacramento Capitals, 25-22, in a TeamTennis match.

The Capitals’ mixed doubles team of Patty Fendick and David MacPherson defeated Ronnie Bathman and Katrina Adams, 6-3, in their final set to force overtime. Rikard Bergh replaced Bathman and served out the match for the Dukes (1-1). Sacramento is 0-3.

Southern California College’s baseball team has added six players for next season, Coach Charlie Phillips said.

They are:

--Kris Apsley, a catcher who batted .363 for Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

--Rick Homutoff, an outfielder and pitcher who batted .428 for Chino Don Lugo High.

--Robbie Ott, a utility player who batted .393 for Mohave High.

--Brandon Dekker, an outfielder who had a redshirt season at Saddleback last year after graduating from Trabuco Hills.

--Pitcher Gary Sussman, a transfer from Christ College Irvine.

--Augie Pena, who played for SCC in 1991.
