Neiman Marcus Illegally Deducted from Paychecks: The department store illegally deducted more than $1.3 million from California employees’ paychecks, a Superior Court judge in San Francisco ruled. The ruling Friday didn’t say how much Neiman Marcus must repay the employees. When an item was returned and the salesperson was identified on the receipt, Neiman Marcus deducted the amount of the commission from the individual’s paycheck. But when the salesperson’s identity wasn’t indicated, the company deducted the amount from the paychecks of the entire staff of that department, the court said. The policy was started after officials said the company lost $9 million in 1985 from unidentified returns. Neiman Marcus officials said they were studying the ruling and wouldn’t comment.
