Away from the podium, the Democratic convention is in many ways no different from meetings of furniture manufacturers, car dealers or druggists. It is a trade show--and the trade is politics. Seminars for delegates include how to use opposition research and lightning attacks to exploit an opponent’s weaknesses, how to combat the press, how to use direct mail persuasively and the art of fund raising.
