Discus thrower Kamy Keshmiri was suspended from international competition Tuesday for failing a drug test, apparently clearing the way for Brian Blutreich, a former standout at Capistrano Valley High and UCLA, to join the U.S. team in Barcelona.

Reached at home in Mission Viejo Tuesday, Blutreich said he has heard nothing about the matter from either The Athletics Congress or the U.S. Olympic Committee and doesn’t expect to for some time. July 21 is the last day for countries to submit their rosters.

Keshmiri, the Olympic trials champion and the world leader this year, told reporters he is not hopeful of winning an appeal. He also continued to say he was innocent.

“By the time I get a hearing, people will have forgotten who won the Olympics,” said Keshmiri, who threw the discus 232 feet 5 inches May 27 at Salinas, Calif. “I think it’s pretty much a dead issue.”

Although he finished fifth at last month’s trials, Blutreich is the most likely candidate to replace Keshmiri. Carlos Scott, the fourth-place finisher, failed to better the Olympic qualifying standard of 207-4 by last Wednesday’s deadline. Blutreich surpassed it with a personal-best of 209-4 in an all-comers meet Wednesday at Cal State Long Beach.

“I didn’t wish anything bad, but I really hoped he (Scott) didn’t make it,” Blutreich said. “When it comes to the Olympic Games, that’s a once in a lifetime shot.”

Blutreich, 25, said he has been following his normal training routine but remains in the dark about the Olympics.

“All the information I’ve been getting is from the papers,” he said. “Basically, it’s a private matter between Kamy and TAC, and that’s the way it should be. They can’t tell me anything, which makes it tough for me.

“I haven’t been officially put on the team. The last two weeks have been pretty brutal, wondering what could be happening. I’ll find out come the 21st. But it looks good right now.”
