Extra Offering for ‘Broadway’

The Orange County Performing Arts Center has slated six shows--rather than the customary five--for its 1992-93 “Broadway Series,” including a touring one-woman revue starring Liza Minnelli in her Center debut.

The subscription series will also include touring productions of two recent Tony Award-winning shows (“Crazy for You” and “The Will Rogers Follies”), a pair of Broadway oldies (“Camelot” and “Evita”) and an imported Canadian version of one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s less-heralded musicals (“Aspects of Love”).

Subscribers will pay more for the enlarged series. The price of season tickets to all six shows will range from $122 to $251, up from a range of $102 to $217 for the 1991-92 five-show package. Single-ticket prices will change, too: The most expensive tickets will cost $45 (up from the current top of $44) and the least expensive will cost $19 (down from $21).

Center spokesman Greg Patterson said the current series has 16,602 subscribers, which means that 70% of the seats go to season-ticket holders for each performance.

The first show, “Camelot,” will open in December, with Robert Goulet as King Arthur. Goulet created the role of Sir Lancelot in the original Broadway production in 1960. The actress playing Queen Guenevere has not been named.

“Evita” will open in April. Valerie Perri will reprise her role as Evita from the show’s first national tour in 1980. John Herrera will reprise his role as Che from the Broadway production.

Minnelli will bring her one-woman revue to the center in May about midway through an expected national tour, Patterson said. Just what the revue will consist of has not been announced. But Patterson said he was certain it would not be a reprise of her 1991 New York extravaganza, “Stepping Out at Radio City.”

Casting has not been announced for “Aspects of Love,” which comes to the center in June. The staging will be different from the 1990 Broadway version, having been conceived for a 1991 production in Edmonton.

Neither casting nor specific dates have been announced for “Crazy for You,” the 1992 Tony winner for best musical, which will come in August, 1993, after an engagement at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles. “The Will Rogers Follies: A Life in Revue,” which won the 1991 Tony for best musical, will run in November, 1993. Again, no casting has been announced.

In related news, the Center also says it will get a road version of the current Broadway revival of “Guys and Dolls”--the biggest hit in New York at the moment--for the 1993-94 season.
