The City Council has turned down a request to allow the rock group Guns N’ Roses to play consecutive nights in August at the Rose Bowl, rather than the single concert initially approved.

Bob Holden, interim general manager of the Rose Bowl, presented the council with the proposal Tuesday on behalf of promoter Avalon Attractions. The agency requested the addition of a concert on Sunday, Aug. 23, because the 63,000 tickets for the Aug. 22 performance sold out in one hour last week.

The council, however, rejected the request without a vote.

Councilman William Paparian said city officials have to consider the neighborhood’s concerns, especially since they plan to schedule future attractions at the Rose Bowl.

“I was pleased they didn’t approve the concert,” said Penny York, president of the Linda Vista/Annandale Assn., after the meeting. “Saturday and Sunday night is just too much.”

During the meeting, York said that Rose Bowl officials notified her of the new proposal late Monday evening. She said she was unable to contact other members of the association, which represents 1,400 households in the northwest Arroyo Seco district.

However, she said she was confident that the group would not favor two nights of bumper-to-bumper traffic, horn-honking, foul language and drinking.

Officials estimate that a second concert would have brought in about $250,000 for the city.

In April, city officials approved the Aug. 22 concert for Guns N’ Roses, suspending the Rose Bowl’s noise restrictions and extending its 10 p.m. curfew to midnight. The contract stipulates that Avalon Attractions will pay $4,000 for every minute the music goes beyond 12:01 a.m.

In the new proposal, Avalon recommended an 11 p.m. curfew on Sunday and offered to pay $6,000 for each minute past 11:01 p.m.
