The principal of Hillside Junior High School in Simi Valley has been chosen principal of Simi Valley High School, officials announced Tuesday.

In a closed meeting this week, Simi Valley Unified School District board members selected Kathy Scroggin to replace David Ellis, who resigned at the end of the school year to return to counseling. Ellis served as principal of the 1,979-student high school for nine years.

“I see this as a fine program that I want to be a part of,” said Scroggin, 42. “I wanted that challenge, so I applied.”

Scroggin was assistant principal at Sequoia Junior High School and Moorpark High School for two years each before serving as principal at Hillside Junior High School since 1989. She has 11 years of teaching experience, including three years teaching English and French at Sequoia Junior High.

A total of 25 people applied for the job, officials said. Scroggin will earn about $70,000 a year.

“She’s an effective communicator and is very bright and energetic,” said Assistant Supt. Leon Mattingley. “She competed with the best and the brightest across the country. She really did well in the interviews and came highly recommended from everyone.”

The school board is scheduled to ratify its decision at an Aug. 18 meeting. School officials plan to find a replacement for Scroggin at Hillside before school starts on Sept. 2, Mattingley said.
