I was very annoyed by two articles featured side by side in the June 7 issue, “McFuture Shock” and “The Physics of Revenge” (by Jim Mann).

I find it surprising that Easton failed to contact a graduating Asian-American student on a campus, UCLA, where a large portion of the undergraduate student body is of Asian descent, while proclaiming that the students’ “stories are almost as diverse as the university’s student body.”

Easton’s article missed an opportunity to erode the persistent stereotype of Asians as brainy, bespectacled nerds who don’t seem to have individualistic views on society, the future and jobs, nor have problems finding jobs. In Mann’s article, there is added another factor: If they don’t get those awards/scholarships, Asians will resort to carefully planned revenge. And no matter how positively Mann writes about the other Chinese students, the main impression the average reader will retain is a negative one.
