British Airways May Acquire 25% Stake in USAir: British Airways is on the verge of a deal with USAir that would give it up to a 25% stake in the U.S. airline and access to a network of major American airports, a London newspaper reported. British Airways spokesman Tony Cocklin said the report was “speculation.” A spokeswoman at Arlington, Va.-based USAir did not return a phone call Sunday. The Sunday Telegraph said top British Airways executives have traveled to Washington to discuss the deal with USAir. It said British Airways indicated that it would “only take up to 25%” of USAir’s voting equity--the maximum a foreigner can hold in an American airline, although British Airways could hold 49% without full voting rights. “The exact holding is understood to be still under negotiation,” the newspaper said.
