British Panel OKs Limited Sales of Halcion: A British government advisory panel has recommended resuming sales of Halcion, the controversial sleeping drug whose worldwide sales have plummeted since Britain banned the drug last Oct. 2. The Medicines Commission, a government-appointed scientific advisory committee, recommended to the U.K. Licensing Authority that a 0.125-milligram dosage should be made available to British insomniacs. The British Department of Health wants to permanently revoke the license for both the 0.125-milligram and the 0.25-milligram strengths of Halcion. British authorities suspended Halcion sales in all dosages because of concerns over alleged side effects such as depression and short-term memory loss. Michigan-based Upjohn Co. is continuing its appeal of last year’s ban.
