Summer Classes Offered at Museum

The California Museum of Science and Industry has recently begun its summer schedule of science workshops for children with a full complement of courses for ages 4 through 13.

Children ages 4 and 5 can learn which dinosaur had its nose on top of its head in “Delightful Dinosaurs.” For children ages 9 through 11, there are “Stargazing” and “Rocket Scientist” classes. Young people ages 10 to 13 can learn about “Leapin’ Lizards,” “Electromania” or “Advanced Rocketry.”

Many additional classes are scheduled through Aug. 9 in one- and five-day sessions. Class size is limited.

ASTRONOMY

The stars and constellations of the summer sky and the planet Saturn will be the topic of Gladwin Planetarium programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning today at 2 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. On Wednesdays at 2 p.m., “Navigating the Globe,” which explores methods of navigation used over the last 2,000 years, will be the featured program. Call (805) 682-3224.

SCIENCE FOR FAMILIES

The Nursery Nature Walks Discovery Program for children ages 5 to 8 and their parents continues with a “Discover Birds” program July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11 at 9:30 a.m. Each class offers opportunities for exploring nature in hikes, projects and other activities. HEALTH/MEDICINE

“Today’s Family,” a discussion series sponsored by the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and the UCLA Medical Center on common problems facing modern families, begins today at 7 p.m. Tonight’s program will focus on reducing conflict and increasing cooperation between parents and their children, 12 to 20 years old. Other programs are scheduled for July 28 and Aug. 4. Programs will be at the NPI Auditorium and reservations are suggested. Call (310) 825-0051.
