NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : ‘Star Wars’ Test Is Quietly Canceled

The last scheduled test of the X-ray laser component of the “Star Wars” space-based anti-missile defense was quietly canceled last week. The test of the nuclear-powered device was scrapped by the U.S. Energy Department under a new policy that limits nuclear tests to improving the safety and reliability of weapons. The X-ray laser, designed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, was to protect against attack by the former Soviet Union.
