NATION IN BRIEF : NEW JERSEY : Freeze on Welfare for Mothers OKd
New Jersey on Monday became the first state to receive federal approval to freeze welfare benefits for mothers who have children while on public assistance. The state’s welfare reform law lets women go to work and earn wages totaling half their monthly grant without losing their benefits. Gov. James J. Florio signed the reforms into law six months ago, but waivers were required because provisions don’t conform to federal laws. The law takes effect Oct. 1. The Family Development Act requires welfare recipients to enroll in school or job training or risk losing at least some of their assistance.
