CONEJO VALLEY : Language Aides Face Loss of Jobs

Share

Citing a lack of state funding, Conejo Valley school board members tonight will consider eliminating seven part-time English as a Second Language aides.

Four of the aides assist Spanish-speaking students and another assists Chinese-language students.

In addition, two similar positions that are vacant would not be filled.

Conejo Valley Unified School District officials have recommended the school board cut the positions, which are funded by special state monies.

If the reductions are approved, the district would still have about 20 aides to help students learn English.

“We have a situation where our employees’ salaries have been going up and the state funding has stayed the same,” said Supt. William R. Seaver. “The same amount of dollars spreads over fewer people.”

Seaver said the district would need to receive about $25,000 more a year from the state to retain the aides who work three hours a day each.

The board will decide the issue at a 7:30 meeting tonight in Conference Room A at the district headquarters, 1400 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.
