A man given a baboon’s liver last month in a historic transplant operation had some mild rejection symptoms but is doing well, officials say.

Doctors used steroids during the weekend to reverse the rejection, said Lisa Rossi, spokeswoman for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “He is alert and in good spirits,” she said Tuesday.

The 35-year-old man, whose liver was attacked by hepatitis B, asked hospital officials to withhold his identity. He received the new liver on June 28.
