The Carl’s Jr. hamburger chain said Thursday that it will close its factory in Anaheim, putting 140 people out of work by year’s end.

Carl Karcher Enterprises Inc. said in May that it would lay off about 110 other workers who make pizzas, stir-fried vegetables and condiments such as barbecue sauce for other fast-food chains. Thirty-five employees have already left the company.

Carl’s Jr.--A Business story July 24 incorrectly described the status of a Carl Karcher Enterprises Inc. warehouse in Anaheim, where the company plans to lay off 250 factory workers. Carl’s says it has no plans to close the warehouse.

Carl’s also said then that it was considering laying off more people.

On Thursday, the chain made plans to lay off the 140 workers who make hamburger patties and ketchup for the chain’s own use. That brings the total to 250 employees who will be laid off from the two operations by the end of the year.

Most of the jobs are low-wage, assembly-line work. The plant is not unionized.

Another 150 workers at the Carl’s Anaheim warehouse will stay on. The company said it is considering a total closure of the factory and warehouse, which opened in 1978.

Carl’s will now buy its burgers and ketchup from outside suppliers to cut costs.

The move comes as a result of continuing flat revenues.
