WORLD IN BRIEF : PERU : 5 Bombs Set Off in Lima ‘Armed Strike’
Sendero Luminoso guerrillas in Lima, Peru, detonated five bombs, one of which killed a security guard outside an office building, on the second and last day of an effort to paralyze the city through an “armed strike.” Bus services were shut down, but most workers defied the guerrillas and reported to their jobs. The violence resulted in a least three deaths, including a taxi driver who burned to death in his cab. The 12-year insurgency by the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) rebels, an effort to turn Peru into a peasant-worker state, has cost at least 25,000 lives.
