America West to Cut Work Force, Trim Fleet: Although the airline has not set any specific number of jobs, a spokesman said the cuts could involve up to 1,500 workers, or 14% of its staff. He said these will be accomplished through voluntary leaves, furloughs or attrition. He said the company hopes to have most of the plan in place in 60 days, but he noted that some elements, such as aircraft leases, will be subject to negotiations. America West has been operating under Chapter 11 for 13 months. The spokesman said the company will eliminate the Boeing 747 and DeHavilland-8 aircraft from its fleet.
