Horne Bows Out: American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne has withdrawn from scheduled concert performances of Rossini’s “Tancredi” at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, Aug. 22 and 26. From her home in New York City, Horne, who has sung the title role in that opera in many other major centers--including Los Angeles in 1989--told The Times that “artistic differences” caused her to withdraw. Hans Widrich, press chief for the Austrian festival, confirmed that “Marilyn Horne and Pinchas Steinberg (music director of these performances) could not agree on the version” to be performed. Widrich said the title role will now be sung by Vesselina Kasarova, already assigned to the role of Annio in the scheduled performances of Mozart’s “Clemenza di Tito” at the festival in August.
