Britain, the defending Olympic champion, defeated Egypt, 2-0, in a Pool A preliminary-round game. In two other Pool A games, Germany beat India, 3-0, and Australia defeated Argentina, 7-0.
In Pool B, Spain defeated New Zealand, 3-0, Pakistan beat Malaysia, 4-1, and the Netherlands defeated the Unified Team, 5-2.
