Dan O’Brien, competing in the Stockholm International decathlon, cleared 16 feet 6 inches in the pole vault during the second day of competition.
On Saturday, he failed to clear a height in the high jump after suffering an injury to his left ankle in the long jump. It was his second no-height in a month. He no-heighted in the pole vault at the U.S. Olympic trials and failed to make the U.S. team.
O’Brien was not sure he could compete on Sunday because of the injury. “This injury gets more mysterious every day,” he said. “Saturday it hurt real bad, but today I hardly felt the pain.”
Besides vaulting 16-6, O’Brien threw the discus 159 feet 4 inches, which is better than his mark at the Olympic trials.
American Steve Fritz won the Stockholm competition with 8,073 points. Teammate Brian Brophy was second with 7,972 points and another American, Drew Fucci, was third with 7,635.
