The man wounded by a police officer over the weekend was identified Monday as Rogasano Velasquez Perez of Anaheim, authorities said.

Officers saw the 24-year-old man wandering in an apartment complex at 2001 S. Haster St. about 1 a.m. Saturday and tried to stop him to ask what he was doing there, Police Lt. John Cross said.

But he ducked behind a fence and then attempted to run away, Cross said. The officers chased him and yelled several times for him to stop.

Perez did suddenly stop, then turned toward the officers and reached into his waistband, according to Lt. Ray Welch. One of the officers then shot him once in the upper chest.

Perez, who was listed in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, was cited at the hospital for resisting arrest, giving false information about himself to police and being under the influence of narcotics, Cross said.
