Investigators sifting through Communist files say at least 350 people died trying to flee the former East Germany--nearly twice the previously documented number, a top official said Monday.

The final figure could reach 400, said Manfred Kittlaus, head of a special Berlin police unit investigating crimes by East German leaders.

Some of the victims drowned in previously unreported attempts to swim to freedom across the Baltic Sea, Kittlaus said.
