THE BUSH BIND? UC Irvine political science professor Martin Wattenberg, who’s made a national name specializing in studies of vice presidents, has some bad news for George Bush: The Wattenberg assessment is that Dan Quayle will cost the president at least two percentage points to Bill Clinton. That’s a huge number in a tight race. . . . But Wattenberg’s advice to Bush: “Keep Quayle. He’ll hurt, but Bush can’t afford to admit he made a mistake. He’s in a bind either way.”
