BARCELONA ’92 OLYMPICS: DAY 3 : DAILY REPORT : EQUESTRIAN : Germany’s Baumann Leads Dressage After First Segment

Share

Riding Alabaster, Matthias Andreas Baumann of Germany leads after the first day of the three-day event, the first segment of the equestrian competition. Baumann, who scored 501 points, is followed by two riders from Britain--Karen Dixon riding Get Smart (497) and Mary Elizabeth Thomson on King William (484). But not all the entrants have competed.

The equestrian competition consists of three events--show jumping, dressage and the three-day event, the latter actually held over four days because of the number of entrants. In the three-day event, dressage is held on the first and second days, followed by a cross-country run and concluding with jumping.

Mike Plumb of Hamilton, Mass., who has won six medals in five Olympics since 1964, placed the highest of the Americans, scoring 472 points riding Adonis for fifth place. Jill Walton of Walnut is 23rd (404) riding Patrona.
