JOHANNESBURG : Potential Flash Point

Share

The African National Congress and its union allies launch a two-day national strike next Monday, hoping that the show of force will wring concessions out of President Frederik W. de Klerk’s government.

The general strike is the linchpin of the ANC’s “mass action” campaign. Marches, rallies and picketing are planned for the strike days, and opponents of the ANC in the Inkatha Freedom Party have vowed to protect workers who want to go to their jobs.

So far, ANC supporters have staged dozens of marches and briefly occupied government offices, prison lobbies, hospital offices and store turnstiles.
