The geopolitical argument for the NBA’s Olympic participation, courtesy of usually mild-mannered David Robinson:

“Being in the military, I see a country that sends people out to war and they’re halfway pacifist. They’re kinda semi-pacifist. And that’s garbage!

“You don’t send men out to war and say, ‘Well, you can go ahead out to war but feel bad about it.’

“That’s garbage! If you’ve got the best players in the world, you send the best players in the world. Now you read the garbage in the papers with people saying, ‘Oh, that’s not fair, you’re sending big guys over to beat up on the little guys’--get out of here! This is sport!

“The same thing when you send people to war. Don’t give me that garbage about embarrassing yourself beating up on the little Vietnamese. That’s garbage! If you’re going to send them, support them.”

This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Baltimore Sun and Hartford Courant, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
