Drive at Cedars-Sinai Tops $30-Million Mark

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center announced its $140 million “Campaign for the 21st Century” May 27 at the Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills. To date, donations have reached more than $30 million, with $5.5 million raised by members of the board of directors.

Love Is Feeding Everyone received more than $100,000, proceeds from the Third Annual Jerry Buss Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Riviera Country Club. Major sponsors of the June 1 benefit were the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, Toyota, Vlasic Foods, Prime Ticket Network, Nissan and British Airways. LIFE, founded in 1983 by actors Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper, helps feed more than 100,000 people a week in Los Angeles County.

San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic raised more than $80,000 at a June 6 Humanitarian Award Dinner honoring Stan Fridstein. The gala at the Beverly Hilton was attended by 250 guests. Proceeds will provide services for emotionally disturbed children and their families. Randy Lapin was chair.

Foothill Family Service in Pasadena held its Summer Safari May 7 at the Doubletree Hotel. The event, attended by more than 200 guests, netted $25,000. FFS provides child abuse treatment, family counseling and other services.

California Medical Center Los Angeles received $34,000 from its volunteer auxiliary at its installation luncheon June 3 at the Brookside Country Club in Pasadena. Proceeds will go to the hospital’s emergency department capital campaign fund. Shirley Youngquist will serve as president a second year.

Alzheimer’s Assn., Los Angeles Chapter, at a June 18 dinner at Trumps, announced receipt of $10,000 gift from McDonnell Douglas Employees’ Community Fund. Proceeds will provide assistance to care givers.

Los Angeles Music and Art School in East Los Angeles will receive a $100,000 grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in early December. This is the third such grant in eight years. The school provides affordable music, art, dance and drama instruction to low-income minority youth.

Shelter Partnership has announced receipt of $60,000 in grants from Weingart Foundation, ARCO Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Northrop Corp. and Homeland Foundation. The money provides support to the homeless in Los Angeles County.

Nissan Motor Corp. in U.S.A. has announced establishment of a $5-million endowment to encourage development in South-Central Los Angeles. Funding for the endowment, to be called the Nissan Foundation, will begin with a $1-million deposit. The money will be directed toward programs that create employment and foster economic development in the community.

Big Sisters of Los Angeles has received a $25,000 grant from Mattel, Inc. BSLA, a nonprofit organization, matches adult women with girls between 6 and 18, in one-on-one role-model relationships.

Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. held its 50th anniversary installation dinner July 20 at the Beverly Hilton. HFPA announced the awarding of $54,000 in scholarships and donations to the Margaret Herrick Library, KCET, AmFAR’s Project Lifeline, Love is Feeding Everyone, the UCLA Film & Television Archives, American Cinematheque and the Community Youth Gang Services Job Development Program (initiated by Edward James Olmos).
