‘The Little Sister’: Camped-Up Chandler

Stuart Gordon and Carolyn Purdy-Gordon’s stage adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s “The Little Sister,” at Theatre Rapport, is pure camp. Its problem, under Vince Di Vincenzo’s direction, is that it’s played as camp, without the dead serious style that brings camp to life.

Reeling itself out like a movie script, it does give Robert Sacchi, who has made a career of playing Humphrey Bogart, a chance to recapture the image as gumshoe Philip Marlowe sorting out another of Chandler’s Hollywood whodunits. He’s laid-back and makes all the right moves, and some of the supporting cast are close in style, including Nancy Gulla as a dangerous film star, Cynthia Speer in the title role, and Richard Hill as both of the villains in the piece.
