Thursday, former German decathlete Juergen Hingsen, a commentator for German television during the Games, dropped by Reebok headquarters in Barcelona to see Dan O’Brien, the 1991 world champion in the 10-event grind, who failed to qualify for the U.S. team.

Later in the day, the world record-holder, Great Britain’s Daley Thompson, a commentator for the British Broadcasting Corp., called to arrange an interview Friday with O’Brien.

O’Brien was able to work both into his schedule, although he is busy working for NBC.

And the last American to win the Olympic decathlon gold medal, Bruce Jenner? He is here working for the TripleCast.
