Laura Garcia and Miguel Rivas Jr. of Monrovia High School are among 50 high school students nationwide who are participating in the National Youth Leadership Program dedicated to fostering Latino leadership.

The program is sponsored by the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. The two students are sponsored by Monrovia Councilwoman Lara Blakely, an association member. At the beginning of the six-month program, Laura and Miguel did community service at Serendipity Preschool in Monrovia and participated in student leadership conferences.

Now they are in the final phase of the program, serving an eight-week local government internship in Monrovia City Hall through August.
