Dana Point Activists Still Not Finished

Share

I wish to express my thanks to the Dana Point City Council for the courage it showed in dissolving the controversial Redevelopment Agency (“Dana Point Axes Redevelopment Agency,” July 29).

This should not be viewed in the context of victory or defeat. I believe that both sides were guilty of failure to communicate. We finally communicated. We all left the meeting feeling a lot better about one another, regardless of which side you were on.

Redevelopment would have been financially beneficial to our city, no doubt. Many of us were terrified of the negatives, especially the power of eminent domain. The council did the right thing, and I compliment them.

Now is not the time for the opponents of redevelopment to go back into the woodwork. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We have major overcrowding in the Lantern District. The debate continues over the new resort hotels’ policy of housing their low-income employees. The Headlands specific plan needs to be addressed, and the street vendors are back.

Now that the council has given us what we want on redevelopment, we should all do everything we can, give our time and energy, to help our council resolve these complex problems that are facing Dana Point.
