Jet Crash Kills Pilot Bound for Exercises

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The pilot of an Air National Guard F-16 jet fighter on his way to Denmark to participate in NATO exercises died Friday when his plane crashed into a farm field shortly after takeoff, a spokesman for the Guard said.
The plane took off along with seven other jets from Capitol Airport in Springfield before dawn and crashed shortly thereafter, Air National Guard Lt. Col. Donald Kunzweiler said. Authorities did not immediately release the name of the pilot.
