Because of light winds Sunday, Americans Randy Smyth and Keith Notary, on their way to a gold medal in the Tornado class, failed to finish in the allotted time and will have to try again. Smyth, of Mary Esther, Fla., and Notary, of Merritt Island, Fla., were in the overall lead in the seventh and last race at all the intermediate points, but they were about 15 minutes from the finish line when the four-hour time limit expired.

In men’s windsurfing, Mike Gebhardt of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., a six-time world champion, finished third in Sunday’s 10th race and won the silver medal. Franck David of France won the race to win the gold medal.

New Zealand’s Barbara Kendall won the gold in women’s windsurfing, and Lanee Butler of San Juan Capistrano moved up to fifth by winning two of the final three races.
