Intel Unveils New Printer Chip: Intel Corp. unveiled a computer chip it says will raise the quality and lower the price of top-grade printers. The 82961DK printer co-processor chip will allow printer manufacturers to reduce the number of chips in each unit and the amount of memory needed to give the complex orders required for high-quality printing. The co-processor works in conjunction with another Intel chip, called the i960, to compress information about each page in the memory and send it in bursts as the page is being printed. Intel said the potential annual market for both chips is $250 million, based on expectations that sales of laser printers will double from the present 5 million units a year.
