Bigger Is Cheaper: Mariners Bank, also squeezed by its landlord, decided to buy a vacant bank building next door to its San Clemente headquarters. It is renovating the offices, once owned by Glendale Federal Bank, and hopes to move in next month when it celebrates its 10th year of operation.

Richard Korsgaard, the bank’s president, said the new facility will double the bank’s present quarters at a cost of about $1 million, which would be equivalent to a monthly rent of $1 a square foot. Findley said the figure is about a third of what Mariners is now paying in rent.
