Caroline Powers Brown; Retired Artist

Caroline Powers Brown, a retired artist who worked as a costume designer, has died at a West Hills hospital. She was 83.

A resident of Canoga Park, Mrs. Brown died July 29 of cancer, said her son-in-law, J. Michael Hibler of Woodland Hills.

She was born in Decatur, Ill., where she studied art and costume design at Milliken University. She came to California in 1939, worked as a costume designer in movie studios and taught costume design classes, painted, made collages and designed jewelry.

She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, former member of the Lakeside Country Club and member of the Altar Guild at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Sedona, Ariz.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband of 51 years, George Puryear Brown; stepson Lee Wiley Brown of Woodland Hills; stepdaughter Ann Brown Hibler of Woodland Hills, and six grandchildren.

No services are planned. Aftercare California Cremation & Burial Society in Van Nuys handled the arrangements. Donations may be made in Mrs. Brown’s name to the American Cancer Society.
