LOS ALAMITOS : Woman Injured as TV Set Catches Fire

Share

An elderly woman was treated for smoke inhalation Monday after her television set caught fire, sending flames racing through her home.

Hazel Thompson, 83, of 11091 Essex Drive, was watching TV at 8:20 p.m. when she heard a popping sound, Orange County Fire Department spokeswoman Maria Sabol said. When Thompson unplugged the set, it burst into flames.

The fire spread quickly from the TV set in the family room--a makeshift addition to the single-story, two-bedroom house--into the kitchen and living room. Thompson managed to leave the house but later returned and tried to extinguish the flames. While dousing the TV set with water, she suffered minor burns on one hand, fire officials said.

A team of 16 firefighters brought the blaze under control within minutes. Officials said the fire caused about $27,000 in damage. Thompson was treated for smoke inhalation at Los Alamitos Medical Center and released Monday night.
