Croatia Wins, Will Play CIS in Semifinals

The Commonwealth of Independent States and Croatia won Tuesday and advanced to the semifinals in men’s basketball, with the winner of Thursday’s game expected to play the United States for the gold medal.

The CIS scored an 83-76 victory over Germany, and Croatia, which has lost only to the U.S. team, beat Australia, 98-65.

In the other quarterfinal game, Lithuania beat Brazil, 114-96.

Valeri Tikhonenko scored 26 points to lead the CIS (5-1). Detlef Schrempf led Germany (2-4) with 32 points and 10 rebounds and Drazen Petrovic scored 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting for Croatia (5-1). Arvidas Sabonis had 32 points and Sarunas Marciulionis added 29 for Lithuania (5-1).

In classification round games, Angola beat China, 79-69, and Spain defeated Venezuela, 95-81.
