An attorney for Alan Page, a former Minnesota Viking defensive star, urged the Minnesota Supreme Court to clear the way for Page to run for a seat on the high court this fall.

Page, 46, a state assistant attorney general, is trying to become the first black to serve on the seven-member Supreme Court.

He wants to run for the seat held by Associate Justice Lawrence Yetka. But Gov. Arne Carlson, acting on a request by Yetka, extended his six-year term until late 1994, when the senior member of the Supreme Court reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70. Yetka’s term normally would expire in January.
