Panel Approves Bill to Require Loan Reporting: The Assembly Consumer Protection, Governmental Efficiency and Economic Development Committee approved a bill that would require financial institutions with $100 million or more assets doing business with the government to publicly report loans by race, ethnicity and income level. Backers of the bill said banks and savings and loans grant few mortgages to blacks and Hispanics. According to federal data, it is harder for an affluent black family to get a mortgage than a relatively poor white family. The bill now goes to the Ways and Means Committee.
